Atkinson - Atkins

Según John O'Hart, el primer DARCY que se asentó en Co.Galway fue Bhailer Riabhach. De éste descienden los ATKINSON y los ATKINS. En los registros de los pasajeros llegados a Buenos Aires hasta 1880 figuran tres personas de apellido ATKINSON: dos Patrick ATKINSON, que llegaron en 1849 y 1872, y un John ATKINSON, en 1873.

Origen: Atkins: Escocés. First found in Lanarkshire where they were seated from very ancient times at the old barony of Akyne in that shire. Atkinson: means ‘son of Adam’s kin’ (Cottle, 1978, p. 42). Means "son of Atkin", Atkin being a medieval diminutive of Adam.

The names Atkinson and Atkins in Ireland are both derived from the English name Adkins, which is a form of the name Adam. Atkins is found mostly in County Cork,but the more often found name Atkinson is found mostly in Ulster Province, having been introduced there by settlers during the seventeenth century.
