MacCARTHY, en irlandés MacCarthaigh, o en su forma abreviada CARTHY, es un apellido que está entre los más comunes en Irlanda, especialmente en Co.Cork. Deriva directamente de Carthach, Señor de Eoghannacht, que según nos informan los Cuatro Maestros (The Four Masters), murió en 1045 en un incendio intencional de su casa, por obra de los Lonergans. Sus armas: en campo de plata, un ciervo pasante de gules con sus astas de oro.

O'Hart dice que son de la línea de Heber, hijo de Milesio, y que Carthach fue Príncipe de Desmond e hijo de Saorbbreath, o Justino, que eran, respectivamente, nros. 107 y 106 del pedigree de su linaje (MacCARTHY); que comienza con Failbhe Flann (que murió en 633), nro. 95 del pedigree de Heber, y rey de Munster. Da las mismas armas que MacLysaght.

De acuerdo con las listas de pasajeros entrados al puerto de Buenos Aires serían cinco de este apellido los irlandeses llegados entre 1850 y 1866.

MacCarthy comes from the Irish Mac Carthaigh , derived from the name Carthach, an eleventh century Prince of Desmond who died in 1045. The MacCarthy Family motto is - Forti et Fideli nihil difficile - meaning 'To the Brave and Faithful nothing is impossible.' Another motto is sometimes used - Fortes ferox et celer - meaning 'Bravery is fierce and swift.' The "Clan MacCarthy" includes MacCarthy, McCarthy, McCarty, MacCartney, McCartney, Carthy, Carty, Cartey, MacDonough, McDonough, MacAuliffe and McAuliffe.

McCarthy is among the twenty most frequently found names in Ireland. The MacCarthaigh Septs were mainly based in the Province of Munster and wee particularly prominent in Counties Cork and Kerry where the majority of descendants can still be found.
