Feenan / Fanning

Origin: Irish. First found in Limerick where Fanningstoown, previously known as Ballyfanning can be found, as well as in neighbouring Tipperary where this Norman family settled at Ballingarry.

Spelling variations include: Feenan, Fanning, Fannin, Fanningley, Fannon, Finan, Finnan, O'Finan and many more.

The name Fanning in Ireland is of Norman origin since the twelfth century. The settlers formed a Sept along Gaelic lines and their influence can be seen by the survival of the village of Fanningstown in County Limerick. The O'Fionnain Gaelic Sept of North Connaught also occasionally anglicized their name to Fanning, but more usually to Finan.
