Origen: Normando, Irlandés. The name Hayes arrived in England after the Norman Conquest of 1066. The Hayes family lived in Sussex. This name, however, does not refer to that municipality, but is topographical in nature and indicates that the original bearer lived near an enclosure of some sort. It derives from the Old English word haye, which means enclosure. First found in Sussex where they were seated from very early times and were granted lands by Duke William of Normandy, their liege Lord, for their distinguished assistance at the Battle of Hastings in 1066 A.D. The name Hayes in Ireland is of similar origin to O'Hea and Hughes and is derived from the native Gaelic O'hAodha Septs that were proliferate in Counties Cork, Clare, Donegal, Wexford, Sligo and Galway. It is in these Counties that the majority of descendants can still be found.
