El apellido gaélico O´Haodha, ha sido traducido en Irlanda al inglés en muchas variantes, auqnue usualmente como Hayes, excepto en Ulster, donde se tradujo como Hughes, que viene del irlandés Hugh.

Hayes, es un apellido comú en Inglaterra, pero salvo una familia de este apellido de Co. Wexford, los Hayes y Hughes irlandeses son descendientes de alguno de los Clanes O´Haodha de Co. Tipperary y Limerick.

Las armas de los de Galway son: en campo de plata, un brazo derecho en posición horizontal, cortado debajo del codo, con manga de gules con puño de plata, asiendo una espada a la que se enrosca una serpiente descendiendo, de su color natural.

Según O´Hart los O´Hea, apellido que fué anglicanizado a Hayes y Hughes, descienden de Aodh (Hugh), el noveno hijo de Cas, que es el Nº 91 en el pedigree de los O´Brien.

En la lista de pasajeros llegados al Puerto de Buenos Aires hasta 1880 se registran 6 Hayes y 21 Hughes.

However, their name came to Britain with the Norman invasion; Hughes is derived from the Old French personal name Hughe, also spelled Hue. This name was made popular by the exploits of several saints including: St. Hugh of Lincoln (1140-1200), who was born in Burgundy, France and established the first Carthusian monastery in England; as well as St. Hugh of Cluny (1024-1109). First found in Carmarthenshire, where they held a family seat from very ancient times, some say well before the Norman Conquest and the arrival of Duke William at Hastings in 1066 A.D. The name Hughes in Ireland is of similar origin to O'Hea and Hayes and is derived from the native Gaelic O'hAodha Septs that were proliferate in Counties Cork, Clare, Donegal, Wexford, Sligo and Galway. It is in these Counties that the majority of descendants can still be found.
