Maloney / Moloney

The name was originally Ua Maol Dhómhnaigh in Irish, which denotes descent from a servant of the Church. The family originated within the Ui Toirdealbhaigh of the Dál gCais (dahl gash) contred (now called Dalcassian) of the ancient Irish kingdom of Tuath Mhuman (tu-ah umon) or Thomond (usually ruled by the ó Brien Sliocht. The old Sliocht seat was Cuitenan (Kiltanon), near Tulla, in east County Clare, where they are very numerous today; though they are also found in equal numbers in the adjoining counties of Limerick and Tipperary. People bearing names descended of the old Gaeilge name Ua Maol Dhómhnaigh. (This includes, but is not limited to, Maloney, Mallowney, Malony, Malowney, Malowny, Molloney, Moloney, Molony, Molowney, Mulloney, Mollowney, Mullowny, O'Moloney, Downey, MacEldowney, Muldowney, MacGildowney, Gildowney, and MacDowney).
