The name Wynne in Ireland is of Welsh origin and is akin to Gwynn. It is found mainly in the Provinces of Leinster and Connaught. The Gaelic word for 'wind' is 'gaoth' and consequently some Irish septs such as O'Gaithin adopted the similarily sounding Wynne as their anglicized name.
