NOTAS DE FAMILIA
  1. Dear Mc Loughlins, Mc Laughlins, O´Loughlin, Loughlin, Laughlins, Maclachalans, Macglaghlins, Macgloghlins and so forth, I have committed myself to the hard task of writing down this search, as a way to find out the missing and the unknown part of the family. Hence, I intentionally avoided quarreling about neither the spelling nor the roots of the surname Mc Loughlin. Nevertheless, the personal name Lochlan, common in the Norse invaders on the 9th and 10th Centuries, or its Gaelic form, Lachan, form the basis for the surname MacLochlainn meaning "son of Lochlan" commonly anglicized Mac Loughlin or its variants, O´Loughlin, Loughlin, Maclachalan, Macglaghlin, Macgloghlin, which are often the same. The use of Mac or Mag from the Gaelic was changed into Mc or M. by English writers.  Information on the subject is easily obtained on the Internet at: members.aol.com/lochlan. The following poem, symbolizes the battle called -The Butchery of Caim Eirge-in which the Mc Loughlinswere reduced to obscurity by the alliance of the clans O´Neills, O´Donnels and O´Doghertys in 1242 AD. Thus fell the Mc Laughlins of noble Clan Owen Kings of Aileach and Monarchs of Eire; Deprive of a kingdom through the fortunes of battle and the schemes of their rivals;Trapped between swords Red ran their blood on the hills of Caim Eirge. NOTE: I have mentioned every member of the family, more often than not, using both surnames (father’s surname in the first place, followed by mother’s surname), whether they are used or not, as a way to know better who is who. Juan McLoughlin.
  2. John McLoughlin y Keenan: Born on a small farm belonging to his parents, his early life was good apprenticeship to the struggles he later had to make. His father dedicated a great part of his time to breeding and dealing in horses, and it was whilst accompanying him, that young John acquired his business capabilities and insight into the human character that afterwards stood him in good stead. Realizing whilst still young that his energies would find greater play in a foreign country he made the decision of moving to South America, and November 1860 found him as passenger on the sailing ship "William Peel" en route for the River Plate (Argentina). It was on that trip that his adventures began. When the ship was about a day run to the south of Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) it encountered bad weather and it was driven by the storm during the night towards land, foundering on the rocks -fortunately near enough to the shore to allow the passengers and crew to eventually land. The Captain decided to make it to Rio de Janeiro and they started out to tramp. For three days they wandered over sandy country when, in exhausted condition they arrived at a Brazilian "Estancia" (Cattle Ranch). Here, they were welcome with total kindness and after five days of rest, they found enough carts to enable them to continue their journey. They stayed in Rio de Janeiro about a month, before leaving in an American ship and arriving in Buenos Aires (Main city of Argentina) in March of 1861 (when John was 24 years old). From Buenos Aires, he took a ship to Ceibal near Salto (República Oriental del Uruguay), , a 300 hundred miles trip, to join his uncle Mr. Michael Keenan with whom he stayed for a short time. It is said that John brought to his uncle as a present,  a fancy bowler hat, to which he paid more attention during the shipwreck at Brazil (in order to keep it dry) than to his own life, swimming with his left arm and keeping the leather box out of the water in his right hand. His uncle offered to help him in sheep farming, but being independently inclined he chose "going on his own". When he soon started speaking Spanish by the simple method of keeping away from the English, he accordingly applied for work at the "Saladero" (a factory to treat meat with salt to preserve it) in Concordia (town of Argentina on the shores of the Uruguay River). The “Saladero” belonged to Mr. Mouesca and was under the management of an Englishman. Soon John realized that his possibilities there, however, were limited and after a few weeks, he took up work on an "Estancia" (large ranch) near Yeruá belonging to Mr. Julian Socca where he stayed for 4 years. Whilst he suggested to Mr. Socca a trial of Merino sheep, as a result of which he was commissioned to go to Mercedes ( Buenos Aires province) to  purchase some, thereby gaining the distinction of introducing them in the province of Entre Ríos. He ended his services on this Estancia because of a misunderstanding with Mr Socca, leaving behind him a record for ability and steadiness. Thus, Mr Socca, who held him in great esteem tried to make him return on several occasions, even to recent days asking him to take over the management of his affairs. The Paraguayan war (Argentina against Paraguay) at this time had started. In order to gain more experience and better knowledge of the country and conditions, John joined a party of men driving "capones" (castrated rams) to Paraguay for the allied army (Brasil, Uruguay and Argentina). It was on this trip, through an adventure, that he proved his fearlessness and gained a reputation for personal bravery that he never lost. It happened thus: Whilst the party were skirting in a big lagoon infested by "yacarés" (big alligators) one of the peons (a kind of cowboy) fell into the waters and although able to swim was not sufficiently strong to combat the currents in the lagoon. John was the only one of the party who attempted a rescue. When he saw how things were going, that man stood in danger of being drowned or taken by the alligators, he plunged in and after a considerable struggle succeeded in keeping the man alive. The Paraguayan trip brought him in very little beyond experience. However he had an offer of partnership from a Paraguayan merchant, in general goods, but the country did not appeal to him. He returned to Concordia and after buying a small flock of sheep, rented a land in the District of Gualeguaycito, a place not far off from Gualeguay River in Entre Ríos province) in partnership with Mr. Patrick Browne. In 1870, he married the widow of Joseph Hardy nee Mary Browne (Daughter of his partner????) and settled down in Quebracho. Bad fortune now followed him for some years. It was the time of the Lopez Jordan revolution (a sort of leader in Entre Ríos Province). John find himself powerless to resist the continual robberies of stock by the two contending parties, which culminated in his being, put in prison by the "Colorado" (red) party on some trumped up charge, only an excuse to relieve him of his remaining stock. He was broken financially but, his indomitable spirit kept him from going under and he held on, and although he had several years of "flechilla" (cattle disease, I guess) he managed to improve his position little by little. In 1881, he entered into partnership with Mr. William Johnstone from Federal. His enterprise with him was lasted eleven years. It was during this period that his business acumen came into play and, one by one, he acquired the following Estancias (ranches): "San Juan" -Saint John-, in Feliciano, 2 leagues; "San Andrés" -Saint Andrew-, in Mocoretá, 2 leagues; "Santa Juana" -Saint Joan-, in Chajarí, 2 leagues and "Santa María" -Saint Mary-, in Feliciano, 1 league. Justified by his success and meriting a well-earned rest, he went to Concordia in 1892 and purchased a large house in order to enjoy his declining years with his family, leaving the management of his affairs in the hands of his sons. He led an exemplar private life, always ready to help a deserving case and to further the interest of charitable institutions. In many instances he was chosen and voluntarily took charge of establishments that had been left without their head, successfully administering their affairs until the minors were in position and age to take over the management themselves. During his residence in Concordia, he was untiring. He was one of the founders and director of the first Banco Popular (a bank). He was the co-founder and treasurer for many years of the Sociedad Rural (Ranch Owners Society), founder of the charitable institution St. Vincent of Paul, and one of the sponsors of the prime movers for obtaining a grant of land to establish Victoria Park -which has been left as a legacy to Britons and their descendants. On April 1, 1919 at the age of 82 he died, being  survived by three sons and one daughter by marriage and four stepchildren. His wife had predeceased him on 16 April 1894, at the age of 71, and was buried at the family mausoleum at the Concordia Graveyard. Dedicated to his beloved wife, John had the following poem engraved on the front of the crypt: "Here our dear ones are sleeping ´neath the saviour holy sign, for a while their vigil keeping resting in his care divine. And we pray that he will hold them in a deep an endless peace and that we again enfold them on the shore where the parting cease".
